Gundog Training

Training in our program may start as early as 6 months or as late as several years of age. Most dogs begin between 7 – 10 months of age. The goal of the program is to teach the dog the rules of the game of hunting, enabling us to take a dog from training to an actual hunt. The skills required to hunt will include obedience, marking, flushing or pointing, and retrieving.

The dogs will learn obedience as it relates to hunting and companionship. The word cues we teach are: Here, Sit, Down, Heel, Place, Fetch, Hold, Drop, No, and Kennel (load in vehicle, kennel). These basic word cues will then be applied to the game of hunting.

In addition to obedience training, all dogs will be collar-conditioned and cross-trained on upland and waterfowl. The dogs will learn to hunt within shotgun range for upland hunts and retrieve back to hand for waterfowl hunting. Pointing dogs will be required to be steady to flush and retrieve back to hand.

During the program the dogs will have over 100 birds shot over them – this is included in the price of the program. Dogs that have completed the Gun Dog Program will be ready to begin their hunting careers as your companion and partner in the field.
